Practicing Drums - Drum Practice Cheat Sheet

A lot of drummers don't really sit down to practice their instrument, but rather just sit down to "play." Just sitting down to play what you already know is fun and can be great for maintaining certain techniques, but little progress will be made.

If you are into drumming only for a hobby, then making progress is probably not really a great priority for you. If that's the case keep doing what you are doing, and enjoy it.

On the other hand, if you want to progress as a great drummer, you will have to focus. You just can't expect to sit down at your drum kit every once in a while and just beat around the skins. You need to be clear what it is you need work on, and then apply it.

Each one of your drum practice sessions should create a challenge for you to accomplish something not previously mastered.

When you sit down at your drum set do you know what you should be practicing? Many drummers don't have a clue what they need to be practicing to become better. This lack of information can kill your potential to really excel at your instrument.

Sometimes, even if we know what to practice, our drum practice sessions can still be weak simply because of a lack of focus.

If you have ever caught yourself saying, "I don't know what to practice" or, "What did I forget to practice" when you get on your drums, this cheat sheet will do you good. Hang it up on your wall and pick which exercises you want to work on before you begin your practice session.

~ Stick control

~ Playing with a metronome (playing with, behind, and ahead)

~ Odd timing

~ Finger control

~ Left hand lead

~ Double bass drumming

~ Fast tempos

~ Slow tempos

~ Odd groupings (3's, 5's' 7's and 9's etc.)

~ Polyrhythms

~ Beat displacement and/or metric modulation

~ Shuffles

~ Showmanship (stick twirling, etc)

There are probably many more things you can practice, particularly your own technique and signatures. But, just remember, you want to be working on something new at all times.

The main thing is, keep challenging yourself by never being satisfied. Strive to constantly improve during each practice session. Just never say again, "I don't know what to practice."

5 Things You Need To Know For A Wedding In Cuba

Everyone wants their wedding day to be special, unique and memorable, and weddings abroad are growing more frequent as young couples seek to avoid rainy days at home and seek out the most idyllic spots to say their vows. For those who like the sound of a Caribbean beach wedding, the natural choice is the island of Cuba. The island is so beautiful that plenty of newlyweds are tempted to spend their honeymoon in Cuba as well!

Some people are daunted by the thought of organizing a wedding abroad, but it doesn't have to be so difficult. Here are 5 of the most important things to get right for the perfect wedding in Cuba.

What you need

First, the boring part - paperwork. It may be the last thing you want to think about, but if you miss out a crucial document your day could be ruined! For a wedding in Cuba, the bride and groom both need to have:

-Copies of passports and birth certificates

-Details of their education, home address, employment and the full names of both parents

If the bride or groom is divorced or widowed, they need to have their Certificate of Divorce or their original Marriage Certificate and former spouse's Death Certificate. These need to be translated by the Cuban Consul, and the original copies taken to Cuba when you go to get married. Copies of these documents need to be faxed to your hotel three weeks before your arrival in Cuba.

Also, be sure to note that you need to be in Cuba for at least 72 hours before the ceremony begins, so use that as an excuse to arrive early and relax on the beach for a few days before your wedding in Cuba.

Where to get married

For most couples looking to plan a Cuban wedding, there are two clear choices - the city or the beach. Despite the temptations of a sunny beach ceremony, Havana can be a vibrant and romantic setting for a wedding in Cuba. Getting married in Havana can be like stepping back in time, with old fashioned cars and handsome colonial architecture. Despite the fact that Communism and religion have rarely got along very well, Havana has numerous beautiful stone churches that can be the perfect venue for a wedding in Cuba.

Those who want to get out of the city and have a Caribbean beach wedding will be spoilt for choice. Varadero is the most popular beach resort in Cuba, but Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo and Guardalavaca are all fine choices as well. Wherever you go, you are likely to find white sands, blazing sun and balmy tropical weather. But on the subject of the weather...

When to get married

The last thing you want on your wedding day is for it to pour down with rain. This is a problem most people expect to deal with if they are getting married in the UK, but not for a Caribbean beach wedding! It's an easy mistake to assume that Cuba is blazingly sunny all year round; as a subtropical country, it is subject to periodic bouts of torrential rain. The rainy season runs from May to October, and the island sometimes suffers hurricanes during this time as well.

You don't need to worry too much - even in the height of the rainy season in the wettest parts of the country there's rarely more than 7 rainy days a month. But for the best chance of a clear day for your wedding in Cuba, you might want to consider the 'shoulder months' of April or November, when it will still be hot and sunny but the chance of rain is greatly reduced.

What kind of dance

The married couple's first dance is one of the most memorable parts of any wedding, and choosing one of the many Cuban dances will add a little Latin spice to the occasion. There are plenty of styles to choose from, but most couples will be drawn to either Rumba or Salsa.

Guaganco Rumba is an overtly sensual dance where the man tries to 'catch' the woman with a vacunao, which is usually a flick of a handkerchief or a pelvic thrust. If you'd prefer something a little more genteel, Rumba Yambu (often know as "old people's Rumba") is a slower and more traditional way of dancing. For those who want a dance that is relatively simple and great fun, Salsa is the way to go. Whatever dance you choose, be sure to invest in a few lessons beforehand to make sure that you are up to scratch for your wedding in Cuba.

What to do on your honeymoon

If you travelled halfway round the world for your wedding, you might well consider staying for a honeymoon in Cuba as well. If you got married on the beach, a romantic city break in Havana can provide the perfect contrast. Of course, if you held the ceremony in the capital, it's the perfect time to find a cosy getaway on the coast.

For couples who want a more adventurous honeymoon in Cuba, swimming with dolphins, salsa holidays, horse riding and diving are all popular activities on the island. You might even want to time your trip with one of Cuba's big festivals, such as the Havana Jazz Festival in February or the Santiago de Cuba Carnival in July.

Is More Television, More Radio, More Travel, More Music, More Entertainment, The Answer?

It surprises us when this type of thing is said and revealed but it happens more often than we sometimes realise.

Spiritual inspirational leadership which is vibrant genuine and sincere is so needed.

King Solomon, with all his wisdom, fame, wealth, popularity and business acumen, became bored.

Do you ever hear people say that today? "Oh, I am bored. I have nothing to do. There is nowhere to go!"

People need God to give shape and purpose for their lives. It was only when Solomon turned away from Almighty God that he became increasingly dissatisfied.

The issues Solomon dared to write about are the same basic issues which bother many people today. Solomon's writings are highly relevant.

He has big important significant questions. Routine bored him. The sun rose and set every day. It never seemed to change. That is not monotony. That is order.

This man who had known such wisdom was baffled, and he began to find life wearisome.

That happens when you marginalise God.

When a man turns from God it is more serious than simple boredom and weariness. When a nation turns from the ways of God, it gets into a terrible tangle. How many nations are in just this very confusion and disarray in these present days?

Solomon decided to become involved in more things. That is not the answer either.

Surely our lives will suddenly change if we have more television, more radio, more travel, more music, more entertainment!

Solomon landed up in a sorry state. It was as though he was just going round in circles and getting nowhere.

He had wandered far and it showed. In his search for satisfaction he explored so many avenues.

If only, at that point, he could have heard these words of Jesus which Peter heard, "Follow Me and I will make you", and if he had responded as Peter responded what a transformation there would have been.

There is one thing you can be sure of - if you follow Jesus Christ you will never be bored!

Musician's Guide To Band Agreements

Band agreements.

If you write songs within a band, you need to plan for the day when you will be earning royalties from your songs, and be clear what will happen if a member of the band leaves or if the band splits up.
The best way to deal with this is to all agree what is fair, and then put this in writing as a formal agreement which you all sign. This way there is little chance of any comeback if the band splits for less than amicable reasons.

Here are a few specific points you should consider:

1. If a member of the band leaves, do they forfeit all rights to the songs, and the songs remain the sole property of the band?
   


2. Are the songs written by one person, or a few principal writers, who wish to retain all rights?


3. If a band member leaves would both he and the band both retain a claim to the song, (this is probably the most likely option).
   


4. How do you determine each persons share?
   
   Do you base it on a song by song basis ranking each members input, or use the same formula for every song.
   
   Do you simply divide everything up equally, (i.e. 5 members each own 20% of all the songs and therefore receives 20% of the proceeds/royalties), or do you rank each individuals input?
   


5. If a member leaves, can he/she perform or profit from the music outside of the band.

The advice from the UK Copyright Service on this subject is:

Where music is written as a group effort, we recommend that you draw up an agreement to clarify issues, such as which rights belong to which member, and how royalties would be distributed in the event that members of your group leave.

For successful commercial bands, incorporation is also an option. As with a normal incorporated company, the band members would own shares in the band/company. In this situation, a band member would typically sell his shares to the other members if he decided to leave.
