Vietnamese is the official language of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. It is the first language of Vietnamese people and a second language of some ethic minorities in Vietnam. It is also spoken by overseas Vietnamese people.

Vietnamese is a language in the Vietic group, Mon-Khmer branch and Austroasiatic language family. Vietnamese is an analytical language, and its grammar relies heavily on word order and sentence structure.

During the period from the 1st-2nd and 9th - 10th centuries Vietnam was ruled by the Chinese; proto-Vietic was influenced and borrowed much vocabulary from Han, Tai-Kadai and Nam-Dao languages and then became ancient Vietic, a monosyllabic language.

From the 10th to 14th century, with the end of Chinese domination Vietnam established an independent feudal regime. As the result of Vietic being used as a mother-tongue by common people and Han being used as an official language, Sino-Vietnamese (Han-Viet) words were formed by borrowing from Han. This particular means of borrowing was different across the regions, which split Vietic into two parts. These parts are said to be the Vietnamese and Muong languages as known today. Although almost 50% of words were borrowed from Han but most of them were changed so Vietnamese did not lose its own characteristic. For example, Chinese has 4 different tones but Vietnamese has 6 - mid level, low falling, high rising, mid dipping-rising, high breaking-rising, low falling constricted.

A character called "Chu Nom" was said to be created by some Vietnamese Confucian scholars to record Vietnamese spoken sentences based on Han (Chinese) characters. It is known as the first obsolete script for recording the Vietnamese language. Research suggests it was created as a complete writing system around the 11th century. It was then used more during the 13th - 18th centuries and nourished Nom literature and Nguyen Du's Tale of Kieu.

From 16th century, missionaries from the West entered Vietnam and used Latin characters to record Vietnamese words and invented the modern Vietnamese script. Alexandre de Rhodes was the first person who printed the books in Quoc Ngu, which marked its first appearance.

Under French colonisation (19th century), French was taught at school instead of chu Nom. The French authorities also banned the use of classical Chinese (Han), leading to the decline of chu Nom since it is similar to Han. During the early half of the 20th century, it gradually died out whereas Quoc ngu grew more and more standardized and popular because it was simpler and easier to remember. At the same time, Vietnamese adopted many French terms into its lexicon, e.g. ga from gare [French] - train station, pho mat from fromage [French] - cheese or bup be from poupee [French] - doll.

However, the current Vietnamese scripts have been changed compared to the scripts at Alexandre de Rhodes's time. For instance, the words beginning with tr nowadays are tl or bl .The person who received credit for creating the current Vietnamese scriptswas Pierre-Joseph Pigneaux de Behaine with his Annam-Latin dictionary.

The alphabet of chu Quoc Ngu has 27 Latin letters, with 6 tones. It replaced French, Han and Nom because it records Vietnamese phonetics in a simple and scientific way. After The Geneva Accords (1954), the North-South division caused the development of Vietnamese to differ regionally. While the North imported some spoken Chinese words, the South imported some English/American words into everyday language. Since re-unification (1975) Vietnamese has been more standardised.

Presently, there are a total of over 80 million people that speak Vietnamese which includes about 73 million native Vietnamese. The rest is made up of and some ethic minorities in Vietnam, over 1 million people in USA and over 100,000 people in Canada and Australia. Vietnamese is also used in UK and some European countries and other Asian countries.

There are various mutually intelligible spoken dialects of Vietnamese, with three main dialects being: Northern (including Hanoi), Central (including Hue) and Southern (including Saigon). The Hanoi dialect is accepted as the standard. The central dialect is markedly different from the others due to its local vocabulary. Although all dialects use the same spelling and written language, they have the different tones and consonant in a given word.

Neil Payne is a writer at the London based consultancy Kwintessential. One of their many services includes Vietnamese translation.

Intros, Endings and Turnarounds for Keyboard: Essential Phrases for Swing, Latin, Jazz Waltz, and Blues Styles

Learn the intros, endings and turnarounds that all of the pros know and use! This new keyboard instruction book by John Valerio covers swing styles, ballads, Latin tunes, jazz waltzes, blues, major and minor keys, vamps and pedal tones, and more.
Customer Review: This book is fun ...
The book has well written, very musical phrases. The author suggests usage with several standards that should be in everyone's play book and it's fun to work them in with tunes you already know - in the proper keys. Take them apart, and there is something to learn in most of them. Great for browsing. The printing is good and the binding isn't troublesome on the rack. Nice experience. I would have rated it a five, but some of the pages have a tendency to work loose.
Customer Review: I love this book
I try to spend a half hour with it every night. This book will appeal to a wide range of interests. Whether you are a composer interested in theory, or a keyboardist enhancing your chops, there is something here for you. Most examples are four-measures long, but rich in musicality (kind of like what the Bach chorales are for those studying classical music.) The examples progress from simple chord progressions to more complex, and each is one is clearly explained. Nice melodies too! It is apparent that the author has spent a lot of time with each of the sub-genres (swing, ballads, blues, Latin, etc.) and has distilled his knowledge into a neat recipe book that will serve as a launching point for those wishing to further their expertise.

The very best time to work on perfecting that Talent is at the earliest age possible. Does your babies really like music? Do they beat and bang on any and all things in their way?

Do they try to work on their toys? Do they talk or walk to early for their age? When you hum a song, do they try to dance? Do your sons or daughters learn something very fast, any thing? Even playing video games can lead into a career. Then they may just be Intellectual gifted.

Find out what it is that interest your child the most. What is it that makes them most happy besides candy and cookies and sweets. The very best age for this is 3 years old. If you have younger children, they may or may not follow the same path. If you have older children, then it best if you work with them first. What ever it is they enjoy the most, that is what you build upon.

A FACT:

"You can never get anywhere in life, doing what you hate. You may buy a home, own a new car, wear nice clothes. But it came the hardest way to get it. By doing what you hate."

EXAMPLE:

My dad and mom worked in an old cotton mill all their lives. Dad had that security of a paycheck every week. My brothers and I wore patched clothes to school. We walked to school in the rain. We heated our home with coal. Yet, we never went hungry. We never slept out in the cold.

We never had as many toys as the neighborhood kids. Because dad had to work hard. Mom had to work hard. For only a meager paycheck. Dad was to tired to play with us. Mom was to tired to play with us. Don't let that happen to you.

What ever your child likes, build on it. If you play an instrument, and your child really likes to hear you play. Teach it to them. If they like sports, let them join a team. Encouragement and praise goes along way in a child ear, eye, heart, and MIND. Please don't misunderstand me, our out come may not be your out come. Your out come may be totally different. My family failed to parse our Talents. But many many times I have often thought about just how differently my life would have been if dad had a took that mans advice and we had made a career out of our singing.

Michael Wood has been associated with music since age 3. My family and I have sang at countless churches, events, radio stations, and a few times on 2 different TV stations. For 14 years we sang and made music. Several times we preformed in front of over 3500 people. Our family band broke up in 1971. Now I am trying to correct that mistake. By trying to help other people find and improve the talent they may have hidden with in them. Customer Review: Close to being brilliant!!
"If you die your son will be like us. Fatherless." From a film-makers point of view, this film is a daunting task. It has many characters but still grasps your attention. There are so many very good foreign language films nowadays. I thought Tsotsi was top notch and now, City of Men. I mean, wow! The characters in the film are young men involved in gangs, carefully woven in their anger and paranoid youth is a sense of dread and being doomed. Excellent drama. This is a must watch for anyone who's remotely interested. There will be a scene where you will laugh really really hard. There's a little kid in the film that you'll want to cuddle. You'll never want to live the character's life though. Also ... it actually made me think about something most men don't ever think of. It's about fatherhood. Before I become incoherent, I'll just end by saying, this film is going to do really well and is a must must watch. Thankyou for reading.
Customer Review: EXCELLENT FOLLOW-UP TELEVISION SERIES IN THE SPIRIT OF CITY OF GOD
This series does not follow the exact story or timeline as the movie City Of God but it takes place in Rio de Janeiro in the Favela. I was entertained and pleased with the acting, cinematography, and realness. I almost felt that I was there and I could have been there in my younger years.

Communication plays a vital role in our society. We communicate through words and actions. Contrary to the quote that says, "Action speaks louder than words", it is still hard to know what a person is saying without hearing them talk. But, we all know that there are many languages in the world and that makes it a bit hard for us to communicate to someone who doesn't speak our native tongue. And with that, it is always nice to learn another language for us to be able to communicate well with other people.

Learning a new language isn't always easy. But, being able to master another language is something that would be really helpful. Aside from English, Hindustani and Mandarin, Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese. It also has more native speakers than English language does. It is a romance language that originated in Northern Spain. So, how helpful is it to learn Spanish?

Of course, it would be totally helpful if you were into traveling. It would give you less confusion with everything, especially when you feel like striking up a conversation with some people. If your job requires you to speak Spanish like in some call centers you could earn very big money even if you're still a college student. Besides, if you know how to speak Spanish then you'll find it easier to learn other Latin-based languages like French and Italian. How great could that be?

There are different styles of learning, visual, auditory and kinesthetic. It is best to know ones strength to learn more easily. Visually, there are always movies, pictures, magazines and newspapers you can read. And on the Internet, you can listen to podcasts and well, again, the movies and a wide array of songs you can listen to. Kinesthetic learners need to do something physically. While learning a new language, try to do it while doing what you love most, like the sport you like. You can look for the Spanish names or equivalent of the English terms you use in that particular sport.

Spanish is quite easy to learn compared to the other languages. It is somewhat similar to English vocabulary since it has Latin origin. You just have to really like it. Not in the sense that you need money or it's cool because you speak it fluently. But, you should like it because it helps you grow as a person, it helps you in interacting with people, it helps you understand one's culture and most of all, you'll get to know how they learn and how they think.

If you want to speak, write, and understand Spanish using easy and creative techniques ... check out our unbiased reviews visit us at: http://www.ten-top-reviews.com/learnspanish

Buena Vista Social Club

Ry Cooder's name has helped bring attention to this session, but it's the veteran Cuban son musicians who make this album really special. Reminiscent of Ellington in its scope and sense of hushed romanticism, Buena Vista Social Club is that rare meld of quietude and intensity; while the players sound laid-back, they're putting forth very alive music, a reminder that aging doesn't mean taking to bed. Barbarito Torres's laoud solo on "El Cuarto de Tula" is both more blinding and more tasteful than any guitar showcase on any recent rock album; a quote from "Stormy Weather" and some very distinct parallels to Hawaiian styles remind us of why it's called "world music." --Rickey Wright
Customer Review: Essential for any music collection
I am a fan of many types of music including jazz, rock, dance, blues, bluegrass, classical, world, etc. This is easily one of the top 5 albums ever created, regardless of genre. It is a magical culmination of music, musicians, and timing. If you listen to this (no really, close your eyes and really listen) and are not moved by it, you had better check to see that you still have a heartbeat!
Customer Review: Modern classic
I don't consider my house a home without this album. I seriously put it on repeat. It's one of my favorite to cook and clean to and just leave in the stereo when guests arrive. The DVD of the making of this CD provides a valuable context to what these musicians had been through and make the experience of the album that much more potent for me--I'd recommend the DVD, as well. Ry Cooder does a great job with both.

As a comprehensive art form, dance is an important part of the ancient Chinese term "Yue", since Yue in Chinese includes several elements such as poems, songs, dances and music. Chinese dance has its own unique vocabulary, meanings, and ordered structure that enable a dancer to fully express his thoughts and feelings with ease and grace.

The art of Chinese dance traces its origins to a time before the appearance of the first written Chinese characters. The ancient dance of China went through embryo and childhood stages in a primitive society. It became ripe around the Bronze Age. A study of ceramic artifacts with depictions of dancing figures reveals that people of the Neolithic Yangshao culture of around the fourth millennium B.C. already had choreographed group dances in which the participants locked arms and stamped their feet while singing to instrumental accompaniment.

Through further development in the Feudal society, especially after the Han Dynasty, the dance culture reached its peak in the Tang Dynasty. After the Song Dynasty, it entered a transformation period as a result of the changes in the entire art field.

Chinese dance possesses numerous types. Each nationality, each region and each type of dance carry its own folk dance forms with unique features and flavors. Folk dances directly reflect the lifestyles and customs of a people, and though their are numerous folk dances, each and everyone is an invaluable part of China's cultural heritage. Yet it is also easy to discover that Chinese dance is actually an integral body with common spirits and views. The frequent communication and assimilation between different ethnic groups and regions, the different dance fields between entertainment for others and self-entertainment, professional and amateur, religious and worldly, royal and grassroots, etc., have all melted and become one in another. Dances for rituals, performances, social contacts, education, clans, trades, etc., all take up an important and indispensable place in the garden of dances....

Here is a list of distinctive dances that are worth appreciation and enjoyment at up most.
Classic Folk Dance - Fans and ribbons may be the stereotypical image that appears in many of our minds when we hear about Chinese cultural dance; in fact it mean much more than images....

Popular Yangge - During the season in winter, people of Han nationality in villages in northern Shanxi begin doing the yangge dance and waist drum dancing in order to greet Spring Festival (first day of the first lunar month) and Lantern Festival (15th of the first lunar month).

Uygur Folk Dances - Uyghurs in Xinjiang are known for their skill in singing and dancing on festive days and at gatherings of friends and relatives. Their lively dances demonstrate diligence, bravery, openness and optimism and distinguished by head and wrist movements. Their clever coordination is enhanced by the typical posture of tilted head, thrust chest and erect waist. The dances, Sanam in particular, express the Uygurs' feelings and character.

Tibetan Dances - Nearly Tibetans can sing anytime for any event and dance at festivals, weddings, gatherings and during their spare time. From historical writings we can see that more than a thousand years ago folk religious and sorcerers' dances were very popular in Tibet.

Miao Dance - The Miao (also known as Hmong) people of southwestern China developed a lively form of antiphonal, or responsive, singing and competitive dance.

Dai Dances - The folk dances of Dai nationality enjoy not only wide popularity but great diversity. Most of them imitate the movements of subtropical creatures. Known as Galuoyong, Fanluoyong or Gananyong, Peacock Dance is the best loved dance of the Dais.

Gaoshan Dance - Due to the influence of the their island environment, the aborigines of Taiwan created hand-holding line dances as part of a harvest ritual.

Ballet in China - The development of modern Chinese dance has taken on a dynamic personality. Usually, young people going into dance study ballet and modern dance first, then they study the technique and syntax of traditional Chinese dance. From there they seek out new directions for Chinese style body expressions and movements with an open mind for experimentation. Since about 1970, the original and unique compositions of young dancers have occasioned a renaissance in Chinese dance....

There are a total of eight swing dance clubs located in and around the St. Louis area (including M.U.S.I.C. in Collinsville, Illinois) that are members of the Midwest Swing Dance Federation, and all of these clubs are descended from the St. Louis Imperial Dance Club that was founded in 1973. The largest of these sister clubs, the West County Swing Dance Club, has the distinction of being one of the largest swing clubs in the United States with an active membership that totals more than a thousand dancers.

Imperial Swing got its name from the Club Imperial located at Goodfellow Boulevard and West Florissant Avenue. The building, originally called Imperial Hall, was built in 1928 as a dance hall, bowling alley and restaurant/bar complex. In the 1930s and 1940s, it was the dance spot of Northwest St. Louis, just as Arcadia (later called Tune Town), the Admiral Showboat in Midtown, and the Casa Loma on the Southside, were the most popular dance halls in their respective areas. In 1952, George Edick Enterprises purchased Imperial Hall and George Edick renamed it the Club Imperial. During the early part of that decade, he operated the club as a ballroom with the theme of "a nice place for nice people." He played "big band" music and catered primarily to private parties. He was able to regularly book guest appearances with popular performers like Stan Kenton and Louis Prima because Robert Hyland, of CBS and KMOX radio, broadcast his weekly "Coast To Coast with Bob Hyland" program from the Imperial Ballroom.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Edick realized that the country's taste in music had shifted to "Rock 'n Roll" and he used his advertising-public relations firm, to aggressively promote the Club Imperial on KWK, KXOK, WIL and WGNU. The Joe Bozzi Quintet, Jimmie (Night Train) Forrest, Chuck Berry, Dolly Parton, the Monkeys, Glen Campbell, Ike and Tina Turner and a small vocal group now called the "Fifth Dimension" are among the many artists who began their careers at his club. He promoted a "Jitterbug" contest where a couple from the Club Imperial (Teddy Cole and Kathy Burke) won the National Jitterbug Championship. During the "Rock 'n Roll" craze, Edick held Tuesday "Teen Night" dances, and it was during these weekly dances that a jitterbug variation that became known as the "Imperial Style" of St. Louis swing was born. As the 60s progressed, music trends were changing again. The 'roll' started dropping out of "Rock 'n Roll," the 'rock' got harder, and the teenagers increasingly attended loud, psychedelic music concerts. Because the freak-out beats of their acid rock music was almost impossible to dance to, Edick gradually discontinued all public dances at his club.

In the 1970s, George Edick wanted to reintroduce more listenable and danceable music at Club Imperial and he found that hosting swing contests was just the ticket! He got together with Teddy Cole, the Jitterbug champion who was also a dance promoter in his own right, and they decided to sponsor a yearly St. Louis Jitterbug Contest "Imperial Style" to pick a "City Champion." These widely publicized contests prompted many of the older, experienced dancers to come around the club again, and Edick sponsored a number of "Salute Dances" to introduce these old timers to the newer dancers. As more and more people began learning the Imperial, they began organizing into small dance groups that met in apartment complexes around the St. Louis area, and George Edick kept in touch with many of their leaders.

In 1973 Al Morris conceived the idea of forming a club, and it was his group that first met at the San Miguel apartments in St. Charles which became the St. Louis Imperial Dance Club. The founders are: Dave Cheshire, Jan Cheshire, Rick McQueen, Joan Fritz, Debbie Dustman (Wheelis) and Veronica Lynch. The new club alternated their dances between Lynch's apartment complex in South County and the Wood Hollow apartments in West County. Edick contacted the Board and he told them that he was very interested in helping their club to fulfill their mission to keep swing dancing alive. The great promoter convinced them, with a persuasive new adaptation of his original 1950s theme, that their growing club should hold their future dances at his Club Imperial ballroom because it's "a nice place for nice people who like to swing dance!"

Good mottos never die but unfortunately people do, and on June 11, 2002 George Edick passed away. The building is silent now but it stands, not only as a landmark where Imperial Swing all began, but also as a tribute to a man who, over his colorful, eighty-six-year lifetime, was able to convert his dreams into reality . . . not a bad epitaph!

As an avid bathroom singer you want to get out of the bathroom and exercise your vocal chords. Well the karaoke system makes for just that. You can sing your song in the confines of your home. No one to poke fun at you and you can feel like a star.

Now that you have made up your mind to purchase a Karaoke System, begin to see what best fits your budget and that is technically advanced. Once you have brought your system home, think of a place you are going to keep it. Avoid a corner or an area that has too many hard surfaces as the sound echoes and cause more of cacophony than music.

If you want to know how to use a Karaoke system, well it's quite simple. You will need basic tools like a screwdriver, tester and some nails to fit the system on your stand or table. Open the box of the system and run through the manual. Then plug in all the wires in the desired extensions. A Karaoke DVD will appear on your monitor.

Adjust the volume with the main volume control of the video and the microphone. Adjust the video screen to the microphone stand and start a sample song. Allow your kids to have the first sample song. So they too feel involved in the new setup.

Although Karaoke is world famous it has its roots in Japan. Daisuke Inoue was a Japanese musician who invented the system. After gaining much deserved popularity it travelled to Southeast Asia in the 80s and then to the world.

Once you set-up the karaoke get friends and family over to have a ball of a time. It is a simple way to bond with your kids too. Time off at home could be a song at the Karaoke. Or give points to the one who finished homework faster so he or she gets the first song at the Karaoke.

You could even make money out of it by setting up a Karaoke in a room you do not use. Set it up carefully reading the manual or call the company which will set it up for you. Rent it out to people who would love to use it for a few hours. This set up works because as against a restaurant where there is perennial noise, here the room is quite and for their use only.

Karaoke system is a good way to record songs, download movie songs and dance to the beat of any recorded songs. You can download and listen to all classes of songs like Hindi songs, Punjabi songs, Tamil songs, English songs and Korean songs.

Lex Parsimoniae is Latin for "Law of Parsimony", which pulled out into its simplest form is the The Law of what can be spared, should.

This is a theory that I have been studying for the past year and through observation believe that this can be applied to all situations that require a more efficient, functional solution. This paradigm has many names, but is best know as Occam's Razor. His razor suggests that when resources are limited or when speed of function is essential, design / complexity trade-offs should be based on what does the least harm to the probability of success, however that is defined.

Form is Function

There is a school of thought that beauty in design results in good function, but I prefer to subscribe the fact that just concentration on the functionality will by its very nature, create its own aura of design. Sometimes, the focus on functional efficiency inspires a feeling that goes beyond aesthetics and ultimately give us the sense that its form is of a higher echelon.

Barrier To Entry

The brain is an amazing piece of kit. One of its most amazing functions is its ability to optimise when processing data. Each brain has been trained over many years (or maybe it inherently has the ability) to simplify individual objects into groups. Instead of seeing each individual blade of grass, the mind sees a field. Millions of pieces of data grouped into one object because it knows, to comprehend millions of pieces of grass would take and enormous amount of effect. Effect that could be focused elsewhere. So it generalises to make life easier. This sort of information overload can happen in design as well; Too much will distract from your likely objective. Remember that 7 Second Rule? If your web app or website has 7 seconds to impress then wouldn't you prefer showing off your functional muscles? How useful your app is? and not long it takes to load the really cool (bandwidth crunching) design? Remember how it easy it is to make your mind up about someone when you them for the first time. Same rules apply.

Just Do It!

What are your objectives and goals? Hopefully, when developing a web app or website, to make your (or your users) life easier! And let's remember, this 'thing' we call the Internet is broken. So don't break any further with dodgy CSS and bloated javascript. Functional Turn Around is the most impressive aspect for me these days. Spend time developing how the app works, refine it, refine it again, then again. Then when it works, design around the edges. If you like Latin phrase then try this one:

"entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem", or "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity"

or just remember, K.I.S.S - Keep it Simple, Stupid!

Ready To Fly

Brown Floyd is a one man band with diverse musical influences, both hard and soft rock. This album has something for everyone.
Customer Review: My kids convinced me to buy this!
My eldest son convinced me to buy this album because he saw the song "Beer Party" and wanted to check it out, because he and his friends do a lot of that! So I bought it for him, also knew that if we didn't like it, I could return it no problem. Anyway, my son loves "Beer Party" and "Ocean Blvd." but I am a Mother of 3 and I work out a lot, and I use the Brown Floyd CD to power my workouts! I love the songs, the melodies, and the beats help me grind through my workouts. What a great CD, we all love it!! The love songs are sweet, and it is a lot of fun.

FRANZ FERDINAND - Reverse Logo - Brown Jersey T-Shirt

Brand New, never worn, front print brown Authentic FRANZ FERDINAND Jersey T-shirt.

Chris Barbers Jazz Band with the beautiful Otillie Patterson on vocals brought the sound of New Orleans to British traditional Jazz buffs in the late fifties and early sixties. This was just the beginning of a wave of new sounds that culminated in what came to be known as the British Blues Boom! On Banjo was the great Lonnie Donegan who became the Godfather of Skiffle a year or two later. All of the early musical melting pots were springboards for the next generation of musicians and within a couple of years the Music scene was to change forever.

My first exposure to the blues was on Barbers wonderful L.P. New Orleans Joys. I forget all the titles now but the haunting sounds stirred up strange sensations and led me a few years later to a life long passion for the Blues as I am sure it did with many young kids at the time.

The year 1962 saw the birth of several Blues gigs in London Clubs, notably the Famous Marquee which made its home in Wardour Street, Soho. The great Alexis Korner was to prove to be a nursery slope for what was to come. Cyril Davies on Harp, Dick Heckstall- Smith on the most wailing of saxophones, Mick Jagger (yes that one!) on vocals to name but a few. I guess that first Album recorded live at the MarqueeAlexis Korners Blues Incorporated, started the trickle which very rapidly gathered momentum and soon the Blues was the talking point of all young music heads.

Playing at the Marquee shortly after, in 1963 was the man destined to become the Godfather of British Blues John Mayall. Johns famous band, The BluesBreakers went onto fame and fortune as many musicians joined and left in quite a procession over the next couple of years. John celebrated his 70th Birthday a couple of years ago and is playing as well as ever. This gives lie to the notion that life is over at forty and its all downhill from there on. The list of Johns protges is a whos who of the music business; a good proportion of whom are still playing today. John McVie, co-founder of Fleetwood Mac, Mick Fleetwood, Jack Bruce of Cream, Eric Slowhand Clapton, Peter Green, Aynsley Dunbar, Mick Taylor and many more.

The band that I believe was the turning point at this time was undoubtedly The Yardbirds, whose incredible energy and enthusiasm were absolutely unparalleled on stage. My first exposure to this Juggernaut was on a Monday morning at school one time when some friends told me about this amazing band that they had seen at the Marquee who had a Guitarist that was simply unbelievable. The Year was 1963, the man in question (well he was only 18 years old!) was Eric Clapton.

The Legend was already underway at this stage and I believe Eric was responsible for the huge interest brewing in the Blues in Britain as the Yardbirds became household names on the R n B circuit. Many Guitars were sold at this time as young bloods attempted to emulate Clapton, some with success and many without. Probably one reason for the upsurge in Guitar bands as opposed to wishy washy pop sounds of the time was the discovery of the almost forgotten Gibson Les Paul which produced the sound closest to the Chicago Blues of a decade earlier. Erics use of this instrument took the Blues to a new height and no-one could escape the flood that was on the way. With the Yardbirds there was a mix of Gibson and Fender guitars in use. Eric initially played a Fender Telecaster with Rhythm Guitarist Chris Dreja using the Gibson 335, but the favourite in years to come particularly in 65 and 66 was the Les Paul.

In 1963 one of the first Bluesmen to arrive on this side of the Atlantic for a Tour was the legendary Harp player Sonny Boy Williamson who recorded a wonderful live album with the Yardbirds that was not released for several years. The restrained backing that the band provided to Sonny Boy showed them to be tight and controlled but Keith Relf the Lead singer and Harpist was a little put out at having to take a back seat to the Master during the gig. Many more Blues legends toured Britain and Europe in the following years which not only revitalised their own flagging careers but gave the budding white Blues players a chance to learn from the Maestros. These include Howling Wolf and the legendary Son House who had been a contemporary of Robert Johnson in the nineteen thirties. The author was privileged to see Son House play in London in 1970 shortly before he died. He was very frail but he certainly could make that National Steel Guitar sing sweetly!

The Album that preceded the Flood was of course the 1966 rendition by John Mayall entitled simply John Mayalls Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton recorded on the Decca label .This album marked the first vocal airing by Slowhand and he chose Robert Johnsons Rambling on my Mind as his debut. The interrelating of Mayalls gutsy Barrelhouse Piano together with Erics Les Paul and his tentative vocals, wrote a piece of Blues History that day in the studio. That Album sums up for me not only the musicianship involved and the passion of the music but the very essence of the British interpretation of the Blues. I have listened to this song so many times now since the first momentous day that it came through the speakers and every time its hard to keep the emotions steady.

The Robert Johnson Legacy forms an integral and vital part of the Birth of the Blues in Britain and is responsible for the undoubted vitality of todays thriving Blues scene on both sides of the Atlantic. There are no Blues Bands past or present who do not owe a debt to Robert Leroy and his magic. His genius and virtuosity with the bottleneck will live forever!
