Scientist

The Second Single from the Chart Topping Album "a Rush of Blood to the Head".
Customer Review: 'I Ran Away' is the sole reason to buy this
The Scientist is a very good song, I agree, but the best track on this disc and out of all of Coldplay's work has to be I Ran Away. The song is just so awesome. The guitar takes you to another place, the percussion is excellent, and the lyrics go perfectly with the song. If you like Coldplay, you must get ahold of this song as soon as possible.
Customer Review: Top notch song.
Now, I don't normally like British people. Their accent annoys me, but Coldplay are very cool British people. This song rules. The video kind of makes me think, how did he do that? But, the song is a great song.

When I first saw the play "Halik sa Kampilan" by Sining Kambayoka in 1983, I was enthralled and inspired. I knew for sure that "Halik" was a landmark in Philippine Theatre History. And it was.

More than a decade later, I saw two other productions of Sining Kambayoka-"Pilandok" in 1994 and Midsummer Night's Dream in 1998. The power, novelty, and magic of what Sining Kambayoka was to me wore off. Apparently, the MSU-Marawi-based theatre group lost its lustre and remained where it was when I first experienced it.

This is however, probably not just the demise of one theatre troupe.

After Kaliwat Theatre Collective's 1992 "Siak sa Duha ka Damgo," it became virtually difficult to match its dramaturgical novelty and impact. The only other play which equalled "Siak" in ingenuity and imagination was "GroundUp," a collaboration between Kaliwat and Melbourne's GongHouse. All other Kaliwat plays were potent when viewed separately, but altogether lacked the sense of newness, and a moving forward.

And Kaliwat Theatre Collective and Sining Kambayoka are two of the most powerful theatre groups in Mindanao.

For urban theatre groups who utilize indigenous artistic expressions like Kambayoka, Kaliwat, Kathara, Kabpapagariya, IPAG, Kahayag, and a host of other theatre groups all over Mindanao, the very idea of utilizing indigenous concepts and artistic expressions has become a trap, rather than a wellspring of inspiration for enhancing our artistic creations. More and more, we are simply duplicating our previous productions. As theatre groups, we have stopped reinventing ourselves.

It is surprising to realize that even indigenous peoples themselves continually reinvent their own culture. A prominent example of this is the Talaandig tribe of Lantapan, Bukidnon. The dugso dance teacher Bae Magila has actually added dance steps to the traditional steps that were taught by their ancestors. Even their drumming is no longer traditional. Going back further, the "ahongan" among Manobo tribes is actually a reinvention from the traditional "agongan." Even traditional gong artists have composed their own contemporary musical motifs with the "ahongan." The T'boli got their kulintang from neighbor Maguindanons. And still further, the gongs are actually brought by the Chinese to Mindanao through the galleon trades. In mythology, the Manobo-Tinananon have a tale about a colossal flood that wiped out the entire world much in the tradition of the Christian Bible's Noah's Ark. The Bagobo and Manobo goddess Mebuyan's thousand breasts is told to be an interpretation by a visual artist way back, a concept that was soon assumed to be the original version. And who is to know how different the tales of Tuwalang and Bantugan were in the 15th century compared to today's version?

In another part of Asia, a very interesting example of reinventing culture is Cambodia. Cambodia's arts and literature have been literally decimated by the Pol Pot regime in the 1970s. Artists were killed, tortured, manacled, turned into farm slaves, and starved to death. The surviving handful (90% died from the holocaust) began to rebuild their lost tradition from memory. But because many of these traditional expressions have forever been annihilated, the surviving teachers and the new ones reinvented the classical Cambodian dance that you see today.

The context within which Mindanao theatre groups survive is the continued threat to indigenous communities and their cultural traditions. The dramaturgical trend and the social need therefore, is to approximate traditional artistic expressions and, in portraying myths and stories, to be as faithful to the original material as possible. The reasons vary: some groups advocate for the perseverance of indigenous life and culture in the context of aggressive modernization. Other groups simply think indigenous culture is exotic and beautiful and focus on that culture's aesthetic merits.

Of course, the qualities of these artistic attempts vary. And so disparate are these artistic efforts that the question of bastardization of indigenous culture has constantly been an issue among arts practitioners.

In the final analysis, the question remains: has the social context-the threat to ethnicity and tradition-of indigenous communities changed with the surge of theatre groups utilizing indigenous expressions? Remember that for whatever reason contemporary arts groups use indigenous art forms, the fact remains that the source, the wellspring of these aesthetic inspirations are indigenous peoples. One can only imagine with such sadness and despair, what our lives and our arts would be like, when these wellsprings dry up.

Arts practitioners and storytellers-traditional or contemporary-are crucial contributors to the whole process of defining a people's culture. It has been proven through centuries that myths and folklore-essential ingredients of culture-are powerful tools for conquering nations, building civilizations, and stabilizing centers of power. The artists and writers are major vanguards of these cultural tools, alongside the media. Germany's Hitler knew this. Philippines' Marcos knew this. China's Mao Tse Tung knew this. Cambodia's Pol Pot knew this. The best way to subjugate a nation is to exterminate the emissaries of that nation's culture.

It is crucial therefore for us artists to understand why we do what we do. If our understanding of myths and folklore are myopic, for example, we impress on our audiences a myopic worldview and this myopic perspective will certainly multiply. People's understanding of many present-day realities depend on how artists interpret myths, tales, real stories, dreams, imaginations, and actual truths. I continue to marvel at the power artists possess! And yet, do we fully comprehend this power, this serious responsibility that we have assumed the moment we decided to become arts practitioners.

Myths and tales are often interpreted by a storyteller based on his/her perception of the story and this is passed on from one generation of storytellers to another in the oral tradition. As the stories are handed over, they take on the spirit of each storyteller, each time changing modes and colors depending on the storyteller's cultural and political framework. This process of passing on stories involves multiple levels of reinvention.

Because of its oral (and visual) nature, theatre is subjected to varied degrees of reinvention.

First is sensory reinvention. This involves transporting real people's stories, myths, and phantasmagoric scenarios from the source (storyteller, dreamer) to the stage by enacting these scenarios based on the theatre artist's sensory (see, taste, hear, smell, touch) perceptions.

Second is literary reinvention or the act of judiciously putting double-triple-quadruple meanings into these stories, or approaching the stories along metaphorical paths.

Third is cultural reinvention or the act of purposefully finding or creating new dimensions in the stories to the point of turning a story upside down to change modes of thinking, and to provide alternative perspectives or worldview.

Most of the theatre groups in Mindanao and in the Philippines have successfully ventured into the first and second levels of reinvention. But only a few have dared dip their toes into the third.

How would you explain how the Bagobo's Mebuyan underworld goddess has just very recently been transformed by some Bagobos themselves into an evil god banished to the bottom of the earth as a punishment? And why would Salangayan or Saangayan be female in another tribe and male in another? And what of a million other present-day myths? Dare we not challenge them?

History has provided us enough examples of how actual realities, myths and folklore have easily been reinvented to promote and impose a particular political and cultural viewpoint. It is dangerous waters to tread, indeed. But in the context of the continuing exploitation by the powers-that-be of these cultural dimensions in peoples lives, no one particular group of people can better challenge this cultural brainwashing than artists themselves.

It is therefore a challenge for all artists to analyze seriously the contexts from which these myths and stories have emerged. And from such analyses, to cultivate and heighten our capacities for artistic creation so we can actively engage mainstream cultural vehicles in this whole process of cultural reinvention. Let us not leave this power to re-create cultural consciousness to those very forces who suck the life from the wellsprings of our art.

It is high time we stop becoming mere exotic creatures of art presenting indigenous myths and contemporary stories. As artists we have a responsibility to change the world and we can only do so if we continue to explore beyond the boundaries of cultural patterns and artistic tradition.

The Future is Unwritten-DVD Documentary

Julien Temple, one of the early documentarians of the London punk scene and director of the 2000 Sex Pistols film The Filth and the Fury, turns his attention now to that other seminal British band: The Clash--or more accurately, to the band's co-founder, lyricist, rhythm guitarist and lead singer, Joe Strummer. The Future is Unwritten is more than just a biography of Strummer; it is a tribute and exploration of a musician, artist and devoted humanist. Though Temple respects and admires Strummer (his influence is exalted by close friends, peers and fans like Bono and John Cusack), he doesn't romanticize this larger-than-life personality and presents Strummer honestly and not always in flattering light, though the director's fondness for his subject is constant. Most movingly, Strummer himself provides the narration via reassembled excerpts from a variety of interviews and the BBC radio show he hosted during the nineties. In the wrong hands, this could be contrived, but in this masterful documentary it serves as a testament to not just Joe Strummer the myth, but Joe Strummer the man, telling us his story in vivid detail. The Future is Unwritten is a moving and personal portrait of a musician who helped shaped not just punk, but modern music as a whole. --Kira Canny
Customer Review: Amazing movie about a rock legend
There have been several movies made about Joe Strummer but Julien Temple's is unique in its personal touch. Temple was a friend of Strummer's for many years and so had insight into the man behind the music that many people did not have. The movie consists of Joe's life story as told by many friends, acquaintances, fellow artists and others who knew him or were influenced by him over the years. Amazing music, very well put-together, and just a great story about a man who was a huge influence on rock & roll and politics during his time on this earth. Joe was taken from the world too early when he died unexpectedly in December 2002 and after watching this movie one can only wonder what more he would have accomplished. The opening scene of Joe singing "White Riot" a capella in the studio is complemented by the closing scene of Joe and Mick Jones reuniting on stage 20+ years later to perform the same song...even though they were old (and Mick a little bald!) they still ROCKED. If you like the Clash, you must see this movie!!

Do you ever remember your folks or grandparents telling you; "it takes two to tango," meaning that there must be more to the story and more fault of the circumstance to spread around. Often, it was a notification that they were not buying the total story and that the blame ought to be spread around a little bit more. Well, the other day, I got thrown out of McDonalds; why you ask?

Well for food-fighting, but I swear that the guy threw nothing back at me, indeed, the manager did not buy it, and threw us both out. Boy was that guy mad at me, I started and he never threw anything back at me, but the manager throws us both out and said; "It takes two to tango!"

Indeed, it usually takes two to tango, but in reality it was not a food-fight anyway, as the gentleman was simply reading his newspaper and never responded. Now that is a funny true story, but have you ever wondered why it takes two to tango? Let me recommend a book that is quite good and will completely clear this up for you:

"Gotta Tango" by Alberto Paz and Valorie Hart - 2004

This is a really cool book which will teach you dance the Tango in true Argentina style and it comes with a music DVD with music to assist you in feeling the moment. The book is full of subtle tricks to create passion, emotion, and sexy alluring moves. You will be blown away as to just how good you can get using this book. Are you looking for pure romance and learning expert style in the Tango? Look no further, this is it.

How many people have used a Floyd Rose tremelo system on their guitar? They are common on Ibanez Guitar and Jacksons as well as many others. But restringing can be a nightmare for a newbie.

Satriani and Vai use these systems as well as many other resepected players.

The idea is that the bridge pivots on 2 pins which allows you to use the whammy bar in both directions. The bridge stays in position via a fine balance between the springs on the back of the guitar and the tension of the strings.

The first time I tried to string up one of these it was a disaster. As soon as you manage to get something in tune it puts a diferent string out. I spent many hours trying to succeed. Exxtremely time consuming and stressful!.

It now takes me about 10 minutes to totally restring a guitar and have it in perfect tune - and stays in perfect tune.

Here is how I now go about this. Hope it helps someone.

The first important step is to put an object or some item under the Floyd Rose bridge to stop is moving back once you have loosened the strings. I usually use a folded piece of card or even my empty string packet to do this.

Next remove all the strings and attach the new ones to the bridge. Tighten the strings so they feel almost fully tensioned.

Now take away whatever you had holding the bridge up. With any luck the bridge should now be sitting in pretty much it's usual place.

Check that none of the strings are excessively tensioned. IIf they are, remembering it is all about the balaance, there has to be another string that is excessively loose. Tighten up the loose one first then take the tension off the the tight string.

Now here is the most important part - before starting to tune you should stretch the strings. If you do not do this they be constantly going out of tune. To do this rest the palm of your hand on the string by the bridge. Put your index finger under the string and raise the string up. Hold for 5 seconds or so and release. It's important not to overstretch the string here so don't pull on it overly hard.

Go through each seperate string and carry this out . Once you have done this then you should bring your guitar pretty much in tune. This should be quite easy now. Don't accurately tune any of the strings, just get them all so they are within one or 2 notes of being tuned. You will find as you adjust some others will go out of tune. This is completely normal.

Once tyou have completed this you need to go though the stretching procedure once more on each of the strings.

Now tune your guitar so it is accurately in tune. Again, do not concentrate on one string. bring them all to pretty much in tune then tune them individually.

Finally one last stretch of the strings. Hopefully by now you will only have some of the stings ever so slightly out of tune. Tune those back up and and you are done. Perfect.

Shakira Rockin' Concert Doll By Mattel (Camoflage)

Shakira Doll from the Rockin' Concert Series
Customer Review: shakira is a belly dancer
my sister is six she loves shakira you should really put a picture thank you suany

Normally, we call it march in. I feel wedding can be a very special one when the wedding couple dances into the ballroom rather than the normal march in.

My cousin had his wedding and surprisingly, there was this segment when he danced with his bride.

The dance served as an entertainment for us too.

Soon after, other guests joined them and we had our first dance too. The aisle was packed with dancing couples.

Even my aunties and uncles who are already in their sixties joined in too.

Rather an amazing sight to see. One of the very few in Singapore's wedding indeed.

If you are planning your wedding and have a special piece of music for your all important first dance, you may want to sign up your very first wedding dance lesson in a dance studio.

Through a course of private lessons, the dance teacher may be able to customise the dance lesson for you.

As you know, we all have different calibre. For me, I'm sure I'm not a good dancer because I can't coordinate the dancing steps well.

However, it is always worth a try.

At the dance studio, the experienced teachers can choreograph an individual dance to fit your music perfectly.

There are different type of wedding dances:

1. traditional Waltz,

2. sexy Argentine Tango

3. passionate Rumba

Dancing isn't as easy as what it seemed. We all saw from television programs which show dancing competition and how graceful the dancers were.

They were dancing as one. They were moving their bodies as one.

However, do you know they may have learnt and practice for ten over years just to be able to qualify for the dancing contest?

But, wedding couples do not have so much time.

Whatever you do, if you are going to dance at your wedding, just enjoy yourself and I'm sure all the guests will feel very proud of how happy the wedding couple is!

Customer Review: Singer ain't that good
I was given this album as a gift three years ago and while it was new to me I immediately noticed that the lead vocalist had no idea of how to break away from singing very "clunkily" in syllables...to every song!!! I haven't read all the reviews to this album (would take days) but wonder if he annoys anyone else as much as he annoys me?
Customer Review: Phenomenal
The Coldplay album to get if you're only going to get one, but all of them are good. this isn't as mellow or low-key as Parachutes. amazing orchestration, sweeping melodies. i admit this isn't for everyone.. some may find it depressing but i think the songs aren't straight depressing- they're more bittersweet, melancholy, hopeful. simple lyrics everybody can relate to. i still play this cd all the way through sometimes and i've had it for years.

It may be that in musical retrospect, from a luxury of twenty-twenty critical hindsight, that Astor Piazzolla will be seen as having done in the twentieth century for the tango what Frederick Chopin did in the nineteenth for the waltz. It is perhaps already an accepted position. With the waltz, Chopin took an established popular form and stretched its boundaries so that what an audience might have expected to be a little ditty was recast to express heroism, sensuality, pride or even occasional doubt. The little dance tune then, in Chopin's slender hands, became an elegant art form, highly expressive, utterly Romantic in its ability to convey human emotion.

The tango represents an apparently different proposition. Already sensuous by definition, there are elements of the romantic towards which the tango need not aspire. If Romanticism placed individual emotional responses upon the pedestal of artistic expression, by the time the tango aspired to truly international currency in the twentieth century, there was no longer any need to worry about an artist's right to make a personal statement.

With the rise of serialism, neo-classicism and, later, minimalism, artistic mores were already, perhaps, heading in the opposite direction, towards a new espousal of rigour and structure. Emotion worn on the cuffs, like concepts plucked from the back of a matchbox, seemed to dominate cultural activities in the latter part of the century whilst, at the same time, Althusser and Derrida, allied with the populism of mass culture, seemed to suggest that there were no new statements, let alone discoveries, to be made. A spectral free-for-all ruled, where distinctions of quality were suddenly both particularistic and individual to the point of exclusion. (This, of course, is necessarily a paradox for people promoting a populist pop culture, since they aspire to mass consumption of a single artistic vision, a statement that by definition cannot be worth more than any other - even randomly selected statement. As a result, those who tend to deny a critic's right to make value judgments must themselves assume that such judgments are perfectly valid in the marketplace. It's a contradictory position, but an essential one for purveyors of pop, since they must continue to describe the form as popular, despite the fact that the vast majority of its products prove themselves to be anything but.) Post-modernists thus hailed the soap opera alongside Shakespeare, a logic that renders a Coca Cola advertisement the greatest film ever made by virtue of its viewer numbers. And then there was Piazzolla, an enigma par excellence.

On the one hand Astor Piazzolla is the quintessential mid-twentieth century composer. Classically trained, a pupil of Alberto Ginastera and Nadia Boulanger, and inspired by the commercial and folk music of his own country, he could have slotted alongside Villa Lobos, Ponce, or even Martinu or Copeland as a contributor to the century's neo-classical-folk music paradigm. But what he did was quite different.

He devoted his compositional energies to recreating and reinventing a popular idiom that was thoroughly specific to his own country, Argentina. The form, of course, was the tango. What is more, Astor Piazzolla concentrated on performance via his own ensembles and he achieved considerable success, albeit local until near the end of his life, over a career that spanned fifty years. But he expressed himself on the bandoneon, a squeezebox that lends itself to staccato, slapping attack, an instrument not peculiar to Argentina, but perhaps only well known to Argentinians. He died in 1992, his Romantic heroism national at best.

It was in the early 1990s that arrangements of Piazzolla's music began to appear on "classical" programmes. By the time a figure as august as Daniel Barenboim recorded his Tangos Among Friends, Mi Buenos Aires Querido, in 1995, they were already becoming established in the repertoire. I personally have heard performances of Piazzolla's music for full orchestra, string orchestra, chamber orchestra, various formats of chamber ensemble, piano trio, solo piano, solo harp, flute and guitar, guitar solo, violin and piano, string quartet, string trio and, of course, bandoneon. But it is surely the chamber group that best fits this music. There is always a toughness to its apparent sensuality that tends to be overstated by the large numbers of a full orchestra. Lack of volume, on the other hand, tends to stress the saccharine.

And if you want to find an exquisite match between the music's toughness and sensuality, its durability versus its novelty, there is surely no better experience than that provided by Camerata Virtuosi, a septet led by violinist Joaquin Palomares and featuring saxophonist Claude Delangle. Their recording of Piazzolla's music features Joaquin Palomares' superb arrangements that capture the music's directness and beauty while preserving its toughness.

A Camerata Virtuosi performance in the Auditori de la Mediterrnia, La Nucia in February 2008 featured all the pieces included in their recording of Piazzolla's music. The group performed all four of the Seasons as a sextet with two violins, viola, cello, bass and piano. These pieces offer Joaquin Palomares a perfect vehicle to display his virtuoso violin playing which communicates the music's line whilst at the same time decorates with highly effective jazz-like riffs. The rest of the pieces were performed by a septet in which Claude Delangle's perfect soprano saxophone bent and teased its way through lambent legato lines. It was playing of the highest quality.

As on the recording, particularly successful were Oblivion and Milonga del Angel. Oblivion is the quintessential Piazzolla, a popular sing-along for the manic depressive perhaps, and not therefore a rarity. But the simplicity and understatement of the piece always works beautifully, even when played twice in the same concert, as in La Nucia. Milonga del Angel is a different kind of piece. Though superficially similar to Oblivion, it manages in its six minutes to develop through its binary form, so that different movements create different moods within the same material. A true highlight.

Joaquim Palomares' violin playing was, as always, more than elegant throughout and by the end the audience had experienced again the genius of Piazzolla courtesy of Palomares' superb arrangements. Great music needs great interpreters, and Piazzolla's has surely found one in Joaquin Palomares.

Michael, a missionary priest, has just killed Munyasya. It was an accident, but Mulonzya, a politician, exploits the tragedy for his own ends. Boniface, a church worker, has just lost his child. He did not make it to the hospital in time, possibly because Michael went to the Mission to retrieve a letter from Janet, a teacher, and the priest's neighbour. It is Munyasya who has the last laugh, however.
