If you love true ancient Chinese art and philosophy, this show will enchant you. New Tang Dynasty (NTD) TV' global holiday productions (Holiday Wonders and Chinese New Year Spectacular) are nothing but astonishing. They are a revival not only of ancient Chinese culture, but also convey the essence and spirit of ancient Chinese traditions.

I have had the pleasure to watch the NTDTV New Year Spectacular for the past three years. The moment the curtain opens you're on a journey to a mythical land and your senses encounter exquisite beauty. The colorful costumes, gorgeous scenes and beautiful sounds are dazzling. You'll hear of legends and stories of honor, courage and compassion, of heavenly beings, heroes and villains, kings and sages, dragons, drummers, dancers and singers.

The music pieces are all original compositions, blending western and oriental instruments. The effect is often haunting, and at other times exhilarating and dramatic. The sets are really majestic! They are giant projected images of old paintings, ancient temples and landscapes. They have a 3-D effect, and in addition the whole thing is animated, a process created during hundreds of hours of computer work. For example, in one scene we see the Great Wall of China stretching over vast mountain tops. Suddenly the music changes and fire and smoke come out of the sentry towers in the Great Wall, signaling troubles and war. Then the scene shifts and ancient warriors on horseback gallop into battle.

The dancers, actors and musicians meanwhile perform their acts on stage flowing and blending in a stylized fashion with the sets, giving the impression of an eastern painting wherein heaven, earth and man are one. Against the grandeur of the mountains, the temples, the steppes and the sky, man is but a tiny particle in life's grand play. When man is in harmony with heaven, there will also be harmony on earth.

I noticed that the audiences were all glowing, and many people were crying. A friend of mine who is a doctor of Chinese Medicine, said that he tells all his patients to go watch the show. He said this energy of harmony and beauty which is at the core of the show makes our hearts, and all our cells, resonate in harmony with a higher vibration than what we usually experience in our everyday lives, and it makes us feel renewed deep from within. He says it even has a profound healing quality. I would agree with him.

This brings me to the singers, even though all the solos are sung in Chinese, they really touch the depth of one's soul. The lyrics are projected in English onto the screen so you will know the basic meaning of the songs. But again, the music, the poise, skill and presentation of the soloists go far beyond words. That same pure power or energy pierces your being and lift your spirit.

The producers and artists of Divine Performing Arts say that their aim is the revival of authentic Chinese culture (before communism smashed and banned it in China almost 60 years ago) which includes truth, beauty, compassion, kindness, tolerance and nurturing one's spiritual nature. As grand an undertaking as this may seem, to bring back to live 5,000 years of Chinese culture, I would say that NTDTV and these fine performers are truly achieving this. From the costumes to the ancient myths and legends, to the music, the show is much more than beautiful entertainment. It crosses ethnicities and belief systems and uplifts the human heart. NTDTV has created a cultural treasure for the whole world to enjoy and keep.
